The unseen hazards of rodent droppings

Image

With the development of urban and rural areas and the destruction of natural habitats, human contact with local wildlife is becoming more frequent. Rodents such as mice or rats, bats, and raccoons often times find their way in our residential and commercial buildings, looking for either food or shelter. Aside from their obvious destruction of insulation, dry wall and cloths, their urine and feces can contain and spread numerous viruses, parasites and fungal diseases.

Rat and mouse droppings are commonly know to contain and possibly spread Hantavirus, Hemorrhagic Fever, Lassa Fever and Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis. most of which are spread though the air when the fecal remanence becomes suspended in air. This can make vacuuming and sweeping the droppings dangerous if you do not take proper safety precautions.

Raccoon waste found in attics and even around tree's and trash bins is known to carry and spread round worms. because raccoons urinate where the defecate, called raccoon latrines, parasites such as round worms have the potential to thrive. If a pet or person inhales the round worm eggs, potential life threating illnesses have the opportunity to develop if left untreated. Along with parasites, raccoon latrines have the potential to cause Giardiasis, Leptospirosis, and transmit Salmonella.

Bat droppings, called guano, has the potential to cause Histoplasmosis. Histoplasmosis, a fungal infection, and can lead to fever and sever raspatory distress. Also, like raccoon's, bat guano can contain and spread Rabies.
